Trong-An is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan Tech). He received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from National Chi-Nan University, Taiwan, in 2018 and 2022, respectively. In 2015, he received a B.Sc degree from the Faculty of Information Technology, Ho Chi Minh University of Education, Vietnam, and ICT/SW Expert training from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Korea.

His current research interests include Machine learning applications with Remote sensing, Computer vision, Video coding, and Satellites.

Biography

Work hard and Play hard

In addition to doing research, Life experience is Trong-An's choice. His favorite books include living experience and start-up books; the impressive ones are "How to Win Friends and Influence People" and "Zero to One." A person who has worked for many companies and start-up projects before continuing to higher study and joined academic work. He used to fail in his first start-up project, but his work style is permanently kept. The working spirit - learn, agile, and innovative with high accuracy - in carrying out scientific research projects is the key to helping him meet deadlines with results more than expected.

Knowledge sharing is his hobby. He had a few talks at the university he studied for a Bachelor's degree at HCMUE and companies at Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He was a trainer for AI course summer training at the EE dept. NCNU, Taiwan. Currently, he is building a series of articles to share his knowledge and working experience at his blog medium.com/@trongan93.

With a hobby of experiencing life, he is also a traveler. Coming to a new land means you are experiencing a new culture. I am Vietnamese. Currently, I am living in Taiwan and visit Cambodia, Thailand, Japan, United States.

Deep Learning for Landslide Recognition in Satellite Architecture

  • Using the optical camera in remote sensing is limited in various environmental conditions. This research presents a system of combining deep learning and image transform algorithms to detect landslide location in satellite images. In the deep learning part, a convolution neural network is used to classify satellite images contain landslides. From landslide images classified, in order to accurately identify landslides under different lighting conditions, this research proposes a transformation algorithm Hue - Bi-dimensional empirical mode decomposition (H-BEMD) to determine the landslide region and size. After the location of landslide is detected, we discover the size change of the landslide based on different time points. In this study, we record an accuracy of up to 96% in the classification process, and the accuracy of landslide location almost absolute.

    Edge computing-based SAT-video coding for remote sensing

    • Observation satellites provide high-resolution images that help create high-quality applications. Thus, real-time video coding is a critical task in edge computing on satellites. Unlike consumer electronics, recording video from a satellite is heavily limited by hardware, energy consumption, and data transmission bandwidth. This research proposes an edge computing-based video coding implementation on an earth observation satellite. This study also presents a hardware architecture design to implement the proposed video coding algorithms that can encode video in real-time with limited resources and power. Additionally, the compression ratio between raw video and compressed data is up to 38. The hardware encoding speed is in the range of 18.69 ~ 18.95 fps for 𝟐𝟓𝟔𝟎 × 𝟐𝟓𝟔𝟎 video at 125-MHz. Moreover, the detection and tracking of tiny moving objects remains precisely the same in both the raw video and the decompressed video. Therefore, this research presents a hardware algorithm and implementation for video coding on a satellite using fewer resources and less power while achieving high decompression quality and meeting remote sensing needs.
